in Italian, this means "werewolf"

Welcome to Mannaro

The world’s most famous werewolf trial in the German-speaking region took place in Bedburg at the end of the 16th century. Farmer Peter Stubbe allegedly sold his soul to the devil and, in return, received a belt made of wolf fur that transformed him into a werewolf. For over 25 years, he wreaked havoc. One dark night, the farmers and their dogs caught the werewolf and cut off one of his paws. This revealed Peter Stubbe, as he was now missing his right hand. He was interrogated and tortured in Bedburg Castle and eventually confessed to all his misdeeds. On October 31, 1589, he was executed by being tied to a wheel, beheaded, and then burned at the stake. Over 4,000 people attended the execution. The belt that turned people into werewolves was never found.

Fortunately, there are no “real” werewolves today, but you can walk the Werewolf of Epprath trail around Bedburg. The werewolf trail starts here in picturesque Alt-Kaster.
